As part of Virginia’s 2013 Checkpoint Strikeforce campaign, Richmond City Police are conducting a “happy hour” sobriety checkpoint in Shockoe Bottom this Friday from 5:30 to 6:30 to ensure revelers, commuters and area residents get home for the holidays safely. This will be one of 24 sobriety checkpoints and 79 saturation patrols taking place in the Richmond-metropolitan area between December 13 and January 1 — an average of more than five activities per day.
The motivation for these stepped up efforts is fairly obvious, prevent drivers from making a tragic error in judgement and get impaired drivers off the road. December traditionally is a time of holiday parties and a bit too much enjoying of spirits. As a result this month is notoriously dangerous for drunk driving in central Virginia.
Last year between 12/22 and 12/25 the number of alcohol related crashes jumped up 56% from the previous year and the number of alcohol related injuries during that same time jumped up 25%.
